Turkey is not part of the EU roaming zone – a classic cost trap: phone on, emails downloaded, €50 gone. A travel eSIM costs a fraction of that and takes five minutes to set up. We have analysed the four providers that matter most (as of October 2026).

Prices as shown by the provider (Saily and Airalo in USD, Holafly and Yesim in EUR), as of October 2026 – subject to change. Depending on your location, Saily displays prices in euros.

Turkey: the EU roaming trap

If you have an EU mobile plan, you can use it in France, Italy or Spain at domestic prices – but NOT in Turkey, which is outside the EU roaming zone. With a UK, Swiss, US or other non-EU plan, the EU rules do not help you there either. For calls and mobile data, your operator's (often expensive) roaming rates apply – without a travel add-on, you are billed per MB or even per 50 KB, depending on the operator.

That is exactly why a travel eSIM is particularly worthwhile in Turkey. Compared with roaming on your home plan, the savings quickly add up to a considerable sum.

Price comparison in detail

For a classic 1–2 week holiday using 5–10 GB, Saily and Airalo are practically level: 10 GB for 30 days costs $15.99 at Saily and $15.50 at Airalo, 5 GB for 30 days $9.99 and $10 respectively.

If you only need a little data (maps, WhatsApp, the occasional email), Saily's small packages will serve you well: 1 GB for 7 days costs $3.99, 3 GB for 30 days $6.99. Airalo charges $4 for 1 GB, but that package is only valid for 3 days.

For streaming, video calls and content uploads, unlimited is worth considering: Airalo charges $24.50 for 7 days and $39 for 15, Holafly €25.50 for 7 days and €46.90 for 15. Yesim stood at €26 for 7 days and €43 for 15 (as of July 2026) – we were unable to re-check these prices in October.

Tip: the code HERMESINVEST gets you 5% off Holafly (last checked on 16 July 2026). More in our discount code guide (→ Holafly discount code 2026: save 5% with HERMESINVEST).

Networks: Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey, Türk Telekom

Turkey's three major networks are Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey and Türk Telekom. Turkcell is traditionally regarded as the network with the best coverage – including inland and in mountain regions.

Before you buy, it is worth checking which network the eSIM provider uses: according to the providers, Airalo connects to Türk Telekom and Holafly to Turkcell and Türk Telekom (TT Mobil), while Yesim names Turkcell and Vodafone Turkey. Saily does not name its networks. In Istanbul, Antalya, Side and on the Aegean coast, all three networks perform well – off the tourist trail, Turkcell makes the difference.

Practical tips for Turkey

Make sure you buy and install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi: since July 2025, the Turkish telecoms regulator BTK has been blocking the websites and apps of many eSIM providers (including Airalo, Saily, Holafly and Nomad) on Turkish networks, and the block is still in place (as of October 2026). eSIMs that are already installed work normally; with most providers, the validity period only starts once the eSIM connects to a network in Turkey.

Buy a little too much data rather than too little: topping up via the app or website may fail because of the block once you are there.

Dual SIM keeps your home number active for WhatsApp and bank codes sent by text message – data runs over the travel eSIM, so switch off mobile data on your home SIM.

Important: explicitly turn off data roaming in the settings for your home SIM, otherwise your phone will fall back on expensive roaming after all when the eSIM signal is weak.

Our recommendation by type of user

  • Standard 1–2 week holiday (5–10 GB)
Saily 10 GB for $15.99 (30 days, hotspot without restrictions according to the provider) – Airalo is on a par at $15.50.
  • Short trip on a small budget
Saily from $3.99 for 1 GB / 7 days – an inexpensive way to get started; Airalo costs $4 for 1 GB / 3 days.
  • Unlimited for streaming & video calls
Airalo 7 days for $24.50 or 15 days for $39; Holafly costs €25.50 and €46.90 respectively.

What to watch out for

  • Turkey is NOT part of EU roaming – actively switch off data roaming on your home SIM.
  • Turkcell is regarded as the network with the best coverage inland – important for excursions away from the coast. According to the provider, Airalo uses Türk Telekom.
  • Here too, unlimited means a fair-use throttle that kicks in at a threshold which is not always made public.
  • Buy and install before you fly: the websites and apps of many eSIM providers have been blocked in Turkey since July 2025 – eSIMs that are already installed continue to work.

FAQ

Is 10 GB enough for 2 weeks in Turkey?

For most travellers, yes – 10 GB comfortably covers maps, messaging, social media and regular photo uploads. If you watch Netflix at the hotel every day or make video calls, go for unlimited.

Will my eSIM work equally well in Side, Antalya and Istanbul?

In cities and along the Aegean coast and the Turkish Riviera, all networks are reliable. Inland and in mountain regions, Turkcell is ahead – choose a provider with Turkcell as a partner network if you are heading there (according to the providers, Holafly or Yesim, for example; Airalo uses Türk Telekom).

Can I wait and buy the eSIM once I'm in Turkey?

Better not. On 10 July 2025, the Turkish telecoms regulator BTK blocked access to the websites and apps of initially eight providers (Airalo, Saily, Holafly, Nomad, Instabridge, MobiMatter, Alosim and BNESIM) and has extended the list since then. The block is still in place (as of October 2026); Saily itself points this out on its Turkey page. So buy and install the eSIM before you leave – eSIMs that are already installed work normally in Turkey.

Is there a discount code for Turkey?

For Holafly, yes: the code HERMESINVEST gets you 5% off all Holafly eSIMs – last checked on 16 July 2026; the details are in our discount code guide (→ Holafly discount code 2026: save 5% with HERMESINVEST). For Saily, Airalo and Yesim we link to the providers' regular promotions – we do not publish made-up coupons.
