What the Europe eSIM can do
A single eSIM profile covers 33 European countries: all 27 EU member states plus Switzerland, Liechtenstein, the UK, Norway, Iceland and Andorra. No switching at borders, no new activation. Ideal for Interrail, road trips and multi-country routes (e.g. Italy → Slovenia → Croatia).
You only activate the eSIM on the day you arrive, and you keep your home number active alongside it for WhatsApp and bank codes sent by text message (dual SIM). According to the provider, “Always On” is included as well: 1 GB of reserve data a month in 150+ countries for as long as the eSIM stays installed.
The honest sums: unlimited vs GB plan
Example: 2 weeks in Europe with a realistic 8 GB of usage. At Airalo, the Eurolink pack with 10 GB for 15 days costs $28; at Saily, 10 GB for 30 days costs $35.99 – the Holafly Europe eSIM for 15 days costs €46.90 (in USD: $50.50). For light users, unlimited is clearly too expensive here.
Break-even rule: with large GB packs, the price advantage melts away – Airalo charges $47 for 20 GB/15 days and $70 for 50 GB/30 days, while Holafly unlimited costs $50.50 and $73.90 respectively. That makes unlimited worthwhile from around 1.5 GB of usage a day – or when predictable costs matter more to you than the last euro. For streaming, video calls and regular uploads, Holafly is the more relaxed choice.
Airalo and Saily also sell unlimited plans for Europe – at almost identical prices (15 days: $49 and $49.99 respectively). With these, speed is throttled to 1 Mbit/s after 5 GB a day, but the hotspot is not capped.

Fair use & hotspot
A fair-use rule applies to Holafly Europe too. Holafly does not state a fixed GB limit: according to the provider, the network operators may throttle the speed when usage is very high – for one day at most; the following day the plan runs at full speed again. Travel blogs cite around 90 GB a month as a rule of thumb; this figure has not been officially confirmed. For most travellers it never becomes an issue; for non-stop streamers it does.
Tethering is limited to 1 GB a day; the total allowance depends on the length of the plan (7 days = 7 GB). If you keep a laptop running over the hotspot all the time, you are better off with an Airalo GB plan (hotspot with no separate limit).
Particularly interesting if you have a Swiss plan
Switzerland has no EU roaming agreement: data packs from Swiss operators cost around CHF 7–10 per GB on average in the EU, while large 20 GB packs come to CHF 1.50–3 per GB (as of October 2026). A 10 GB Europe pack from Airalo or Saily works out at approx. CHF 2–3/GB when converted – the price advantage has shrunk in 2026 and depends on your operator. Holafly also lists the Europe eSIM in Swiss francs: 7 days CHF 23.90, 15 days CHF 43.90, 30 days CHF 64.50.
You will find details and comparison figures in our separate guide (→ EU roaming from Switzerland 2026: how to avoid the cost trap).
Recommendation by type of user
Road trip through several countries plus heavy usage: Holafly Europe – one profile, no sums to do, and 5% cheaper with HERMESINVEST.
City break in one country: a single-country eSIM is usually cheaper than Europe unlimited – see our country guides.
Tight budget: Airalo or Saily with a GB plan – 5 GB costs around $19, 10 GB $26–36 ($23 for 30 days at Nomad). That is enough for most city breaks.
Quick buying guide
- Interrail / multi-country road tripHolafly Europe for 15 or 30 days. One profile, no topping up, 5% off with HERMESINVEST.
- 1 country, 1 week, ≤ 5 GBA single-country eSIM (Airalo/Saily) – considerably cheaper than a Europe unlimited plan.
- Working remotely on the road, lots of streamingHolafly Europe – but mind the hotspot limit (1 GB/day); otherwise an Airalo GB plan.
What to watch out for
- Fair use applies to the Europe eSIM as well: Holafly states no fixed GB limit; according to the provider, the network operator may throttle for a maximum of one day when usage is very high.
- Hotspot 1 GB/day – a real bottleneck if you tether a laptop.
- Not every European country is included in the plan: Turkey and the Western Balkans (Serbia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia) are missing and are sold by Holafly as separate packages; Airalo Eurolink covers them as well. You can see the list of countries before you buy.
- No use in your home country: according to Holafly's FAQ, the eSIMs provide no connection in your own country – and if you live in the EU, that applies to the entire EU. With an EU mobile plan you roam at domestic rates within the EU anyway; if you live outside the EU, for example in Switzerland or the UK, use within the EU is not affected.
- Actively switch off data roaming on your home SIM as soon as the eSIM is running.
FAQ
Which countries does the Europe eSIM cover?
Holafly Europe covers 33 countries: all 27 EU member states as well as Switzerland, Liechtenstein, the UK, Norway, Iceland and Andorra. Serbia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia are not included (separate Balkans package). You can check in the list of countries before you buy whether your destination is covered – Turkey, for example, is sold as a separate package (→ Best eSIM for Turkey 2026: prices, networks & our pick).
Is the eSIM enough for working remotely on the road?
For data on your smartphone: yes, with no worries about your allowance. As a hotspot for your laptop: only up to a point, because tethering is limited to 1 GB a day. If you work on a laptop every day, choose a plan without a hotspot limit, for example from Airalo or Saily.
