Company profile
NordVPN started in 2012 as a project of two Lithuanian founders and is now one of the best-known VPNs in the world – with more than 7,100 servers in 150 countries (figures from NordVPN, as of 9 October 2026) and one of the largest user bases in the industry.
The corporate structure is deliberate and often misunderstood: NordVPN is developed and operated by Nord Security, with its operational headquarters in Vilnius – legally, however, the service is registered in Panama, which has no data-retention laws. For a no-logs provider that is a feature, not a way of hiding: the no-logs promise has been confirmed six times by external auditors (PwC Switzerland in 2018 and 2020, Deloitte from 2022 to 2025), and according to NordVPN the servers run without hard drives (RAM-only).
The Nord Security family also includes NordPass (password manager), NordLocker (encrypted storage), Saily (travel eSIM) and NordLayer (business) – and, since the merger announced in 2022, Surfshark as well, which is nevertheless run independently. We assess both brands independently of each other.
In 2026 NordVPN restructured its offering: the app is marketed as a comprehensive security suite, the former “Threat Protection Pro” is now called next-generation antivirus, and the “Plus” plan no longer appears on the pricing page. In January 2026 an attacker claimed to have obtained data from NordVPN; according to NordVPN it came from an isolated third-party test environment and contained only test data (BleepingComputer, 5 January 2026).

- NordVPN plans
- Basic (VPN on 10 devices, protection against phishing and scam sites), Complete (adds NordPass, 1 TB of NordLocker and malware protection on the computer) and Prime (adds insurance and identity protection, aimed at the USA). NordVPN shows different top-tier plans depending on the country. As of 9 October 2026.

- NordPass (password manager), NordLocker (storage), Saily (travel eSIM) and NordLayer (B2B) run under the same roof.
What users say
Specialist media rate NordVPN highly: TechRadar gives it 90 out of 100 points (as of 6 October 2026), Tom's Guide 89 out of 100 (as of 17 June 2026). On Trustpilot NordVPN stands at 4.2 out of 5 from 50,628 reviews (as of 9 October 2026); 12% of reviews give only one star. Notably, the criticism is almost always about billing, auto-renewal and renewal prices, almost never about the technology.
- High speed with the NordLynx protocol (TechRadar: 1,427 Mbit/s on a 10 Gbit line)
- No-logs promise audited six times by external firms, RAM-only servers according to the provider
- Unblocked almost all streaming services tested by TechRadar and Tom's Guide
- Renewal prices are well above the introductory offer (Basic: $139.08 per year)
- Monthly plan disproportionately expensive (from $14.99)
- Lawsuits over auto-renewal are pending in the USA (TechRadar, 6 October 2026)
- Aggressive countdown advertising on its own website
Alternatives, honestly rated

- CyberGhostLarge server fleet and 45-day money-back guarantee on terms of 6 months or more (monthly plan: 14 days, as of 12 October 2026) – a solid budget alternative.
FAQ
Is NordVPN legitimate?
Yes – on the market since 2012, a no-logs promise audited six times by external firms, RAM-only servers according to the provider and one of the largest user bases in the industry. Our full assessment: (→ NordVPN review 2026: is the market leader still worth it?).
Why is NordVPN based in Panama?
Panama has no data-retention laws – for a no-logs service, the jurisdiction is a protective argument. The service is developed and operated by Nord Security, whose operational headquarters are in Lithuania.
Do NordVPN and Surfshark belong together?
Yes, since 2022 under the umbrella of Nord Security – but the products are developed and sold independently. We assess both independently: (→ Surfshark review 2026: cheap, but is it good?).
Is there a NordVPN discount code?
You do not need a code for the prices on nordvpn.com: the 2-year Basic plan with three extra months costs $3.49 per month ($94.23 for 27 months, US-dollar view excluding taxes; checked 22 October 2026, during NordVPN's Black Friday sale running from 21 October to 9 December 2026). We do not list a verified code of our own for NordVPN. Prices and our assessment of the Black Friday promotion: (→ NordVPN Black Friday 2026: what the promotion really gets you).
How do I avoid the expensive renewal?
The biggest point of criticism: after the first term the price rises significantly – according to the pricing page, Basic renews at $139.08 per year (as of 9 October 2026). Honest tip: switch off auto-renewal in your account well before the term ends, then compare afresh.
Which plan is worth it?
For the VPN alone, Basic is enough. Complete adds the NordPass password manager, 1 TB of encrypted storage and full malware protection on the computer – worth it if you do not yet have a password manager. Our comparison: (→ Best password managers 2026: 1Password, NordPass, Bitwarden and Proton Pass compared).
Does NordVPN work with Netflix?
Yes – in the tests by TechRadar and Tom's Guide, Netflix country libraries and other streaming services worked reliably; we have not carried out a hands-on test of our own. Details: (→ NordVPN review 2026: is the market leader still worth it?).
How many devices can NordVPN run on?
On 10 devices at the same time, in every plan. According to the pricing page, all plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee (as of 9 October 2026).
