Since Broadcom made VMware Fusion Pro free for everyone at the end of 2024, the question has to be asked afresh: why pay for Parallels at all? We compare honestly – and the answer is not as one-sided as the price suggests (as of October 2026).

The price: Fusion free, Parallels $99.99 per year
In November 2024 Broadcom made VMware Fusion Pro free for personal, educational AND commercial use – with no licence key. That still applies (release notes for Fusion 26H1u1, retrieved on 9 October 2026).
Parallels Desktop regularly costs $99.99 per year in the Standard edition, the one-off purchase $219.99 (Parallels, 28 July 2026). On price that is a clear point for Fusion – but price is not everything.
The catch with Fusion: no support
The free version has the full feature set, but Broadcom handles support requests only for customers with a contract. Free users are left with the community and the knowledge base. If you can cope on your own when problems arise (Windows installation, drivers, update bugs), you save real money.
If you can't, with Parallels you are deliberately paying for help – official support is one of the central reasons for the subscription.
Fusion is not being discontinued: the current version is 26H1u1 of 3 September 2026, which closes two security vulnerabilities, and Broadcom states in its FAQ that there are no plans to phase Fusion out.
Setup & everyday use: Parallels' home turf
Parallels downloads Windows 11 ARM at the push of a button and installs it largely automatically – with Fusion, obtaining and setting up Windows is considerably more manual work.
Coherence mode (Windows apps as native Mac windows) is the biggest gain in convenience in everyday use. According to Broadcom's knowledge base, Fusion does not offer its counterpart, Unity mode, for Windows 11 on Macs with an Apple chip (retrieved on 9 October 2026).
Apple Silicon & new macOS versions
Both run Windows 11 for Arm on M-series chips. In its help article, however, Microsoft names only Parallels Desktop as an authorised solution; Fusion does not appear there.
Parallels Desktop 27 has supported macOS 27 since its launch in August 2026. As of 9 October 2026 we found no official statement from Broadcom on macOS 27 as a host – if you move to a new macOS early, you are on the safer side with Parallels.
For Intel Macs the reverse applies: Parallels Desktop 27 no longer runs there (version 26 remains), while Fusion is still available for Intel Macs too.
Our pick for each type of user
Convenience, support, set it up once and it just works → Parallels Desktop (see our analysis: (→ Parallels Desktop 27 review: Windows on the Mac – what it can do and what it can't)).
Technically confident, budget matters, no support needed → VMware Fusion for free.
Only a Windows app every few months → Fusion is more than enough.
If you decide on Parallels: new customers regularly get a discount on the first year – check the purchase page for the current offer.

FAQ
Is VMware Fusion really completely free?
Yes, since November 2024 – Fusion Pro for everyone, including commercial use, with no licence key. The only restriction: no support from Broadcom without a contract. As of 9 October 2026.
Can Fusion do everything Parallels can?
Functionally close, but less convenient: more manual work during setup and, according to Broadcom, no Unity mode for Windows 11 on Macs with an Apple chip.
Which is easier for beginners?
Clearly Parallels – the Windows download and installation run almost automatically.
Which one runs on an Intel Mac?
Fusion is still available for Intel Macs. Parallels Desktop 27 runs only on Macs with an Apple chip; for Intel Macs, Parallels Desktop 26 remains.
What about the free alternative UTM?
Open source and also free, but even more tinkering than Fusion – only for tech enthusiasts.
Making Fusion free was a strong move – but Parallels justifies its price with convenience, support and speed. Rule of thumb: time is money – if you value your time at more than $99.99 per year, choose Parallels; if you like tinkering yourself, Fusion gets you there just as well for free.
