pCloud is one of the few major cloud storage services you can buy once and then use without a subscription. This analysis is based on pCloud's pricing page, help centre and terms of service (retrieved on 19 October 2026), on the expert reviews by TechRadar and Cloudwards and the consumer organisations Que Choisir and Testachats, and on user reviews on Trustpilot and in the app stores. We have not carried out a hands-on test of our own.

Prices according to pcloud.com (US dollar view), retrieved on 19 October 2026. In Europe pCloud bills in euros and the amounts differ; what counts is your basket.

Prices: subscription versus one-off purchase

On 19 October 2026, pcloud.com (US dollar view) listed three plans: Premium with 500 GB, Premium Plus with 2 TB and Ultra with 10 TB. On subscription they cost $4.99, $9.99 and $29.99 per month, or $49.99, $99.99 and $299.99 per year – according to pCloud, annual billing saves 20%.

As a lifetime purchase the same plans cost $219, $499 and $1,499. pCloud shows crossed-out prices of $279, $709 and $2,799 next to them; these «regular prices» have not been seen for weeks, so treat the lower amounts as the norm. There is no 1 TB plan on the pricing page, only in promotions.

Family plans are lifetime only: 2 TB for $749 and 10 TB for $1,849, each for up to five people with their own private storage area; whoever owns the plan allocates the space.

According to the pCloud help centre, billing is in euros for Europe, in pounds for the United Kingdom and otherwise in US dollars. The euro list prices are higher than the dollar amounts: in its summer 2026 promotion pCloud quoted a regular price of €599 for 2 TB lifetime, and €299 in the promotion. What counts is the amount in your basket.

pCloud cuts its lifetime prices several times a year. So far in 2026 there has been a summer promotion (20 July–9 August), a back-to-school promotion in August, one for the company's anniversary (7–27 September) and one for German Unity Day (28 September–9 October, 2 TB for €379 including encryption). On Black Friday 2025, 2 TB cost €279 – the biggest discounts of the year are usually around Black Friday.

Does lifetime pay off?

At list price: $499 for 2 TB equals five annual subscriptions at $99.99. From the sixth year onwards you use the storage for free.

At a promotional price: €279 (Black Friday 2025) is less than three annual subscriptions, €379 just under four. If you stay longer than three to four years, buying works out cheaper – provided pCloud is still around by then.

What «lifetime» means is set out in the terms: the plan is valid for the lifetime of the account holder or for 99 years, whichever is shorter. The remaining risk is the company itself: pCloud has existed since 2013 and funds its one-off buyers through new customers and business customers. That is not a guarantee spanning decades.

If you need more space later, you pay the full price of the larger lifetime plan; the storage is added together (500 GB plus 2 TB makes 2.5 TB), up to a maximum of 17.5 TB per account.

The refund window is short: 14 calendar days from purchase, requested in writing. After that, according to the terms, there is no refund – not even on the lifetime plan.

What pCloud can do

There are apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, plus the web interface. pCloud Drive mounts the storage as a virtual drive without using local disk space; on top of that you can sync any folders you like. Cloudwards names this as a strength in its review (as of 26 February 2026), along with the speed: in its test upload of 5 GB over a 100 Mbit line, pCloud took around seven minutes on average – as fast as Dropbox and Google Drive.

Files of any size, backup of computer folders and your phone's photo gallery, share links with passwords and file requests (password and expiry date only on paid plans), plus a built-in music and video player that streams straight from the cloud.

File versions and the recycle bin go back 15 days (free) or 30 days (paid); with «Rewind» you can restore the whole account to an earlier state. If you want 365 days, you need the paid «Extended File History» add-on – pCloud does not state its price on the help page.

New in the Premium plans are «pCloud Photos» (timeline and map) and «pCloud Docs» with editors for documents, spreadsheets and presentations. With these pCloud addresses an old criticism; whether document collaboration comes close to Google Docs has not yet been assessed by the expert reviews.

The free plan starts at 2 GB; through the getting-started tutorial and invitations it can be expanded to 10 GB. pCloud deletes free accounts that remain inactive for twelve months.

Encryption: the standard – and the surcharge

By default pCloud encrypts transfers with TLS and data on the server with AES-256, stores several copies and offers two-factor authentication. pCloud can technically read your files in the process – just like Google Drive and Dropbox.

True zero-knowledge encryption comes as the «pCloud Encryption» add-on (formerly «pCloud Crypto»): a folder that is encrypted on your device and whose key only you know. The price: $150 one-off (crossed out: $229) or $49.99 per year; the pricing page does not list a monthly subscription. In promotions pCloud often includes the encryption for free.

The technology has drawn criticism: in October 2024, researchers at ETH Zurich showed («End-to-End Encrypted Cloud Storage in the Wild», ACM CCS 2024) that a malicious server could inject keys or files into pCloud Encryption and alter metadata. pCloud spoke of theoretical scenarios that did not compromise the security of the files; as of October 2026 it has not announced an update fixing the described weaknesses (Gizmodo, 13 October 2026). For photos and backups this is a secondary concern. For genuinely sensitive documents it is an argument for encrypting them yourself beforehand – or choosing a service with end-to-end encryption as standard, such as Proton Drive.

Server location, headquarters and jurisdiction

When you register, you choose the server location: Luxembourg (EU) or Dallas, Texas (USA). Switching later costs $19.99, is possible at most every three months, and you lose the Rewind history and the passwords on share links. Folders can only be shared with accounts in the same region.

Your contracting party is pCloud International AG, based in Baar (canton of Zug, Switzerland); Swiss law applies with Zurich as the place of jurisdiction, or your place of residence if you are a customer in the EU. pCloud was founded in 2013; the company claims over 22 million users (elsewhere 24 million) and more than 60 employees. A large part of the development is based in Sofia – the apps are published by the Bulgarian pCloud EOOD. The CEO is Tunio Zafer.

As a Swiss company, pCloud is not subject to the US CLOUD Act, which can oblige US providers such as Google and Dropbox to hand over data – regardless of where the servers are. How the three differ in everyday use: (→ pCloud vs Google Drive vs Dropbox 2026: which cloud storage is worth it?).

The February 2026 incident

In February 2026, users reported in forums and on Trustpilot that file and folder names from other people's accounts had appeared in the pCloud Drive desktop app. pCloud told affected users that only names and modification dates had been visible – no file contents, login credentials or personal data; the cause was an edge case in the desktop app's login logic, and the bug had been fixed. There is no public statement in the blog or the release notes (Gizmodo, 13 October 2026).

No data breach involving file contents is known at pCloud to date. But the way the incident was handled – replies only to those affected – fits the most frequent criticism of the company: its communication.

Support and user reviews

Support is available by email and via a chatbot; there is no live chat and no phone hotline for private customers. Cloudwards received replies within hours; TechRadar calls the support «a bit thin» and would like to see a live chat.

On Trustpilot pCloud scores 3.1 out of 5 from 1,696 reviews (57% five stars, 22% one star; as of 19 October 2026). The negative reviews revolve around slow or missing replies from support, refused refunds after the 14-day window, sync problems and crashes of the Mac app; pCloud says it replies to all negative reviews. Praised are the ease of use across all platforms, the virtual drive, the lifetime price and the EU servers.

The app stores paint a better picture: 4.6 out of 5 from 5,831 reviews in the German App Store, 4.5 on Google Play from around 94,000.

What independent reviews say

TechRadar ranks pCloud second in its «Best cloud storage of 2026» list (as of 13 August 2026) as «Best for lifetime value» with 4 out of 5 stars – behind IDrive, ahead of Sync.com, OneDrive and Google Drive. Praised: value for money and the free plan; criticised: the desktop interface and the support.

Cloudwards (review updated 26 February 2026) awards 92% for speed, 90% for features, ease of use, security and sync, 85% for pricing, and 80% for privacy and support in its sub-scores. Criticism: no office integration, encryption and extended file history only at an extra charge.

The consumer organisations Que Choisir (France) and Testachats (Belgium) tested twelve cloud services; both recommend Dropbox and pCloud, with pCloud scoring on security and privacy (test.de, 9 February 2026). Germany's Stiftung Warentest itself had marked pCloud down in 2023 for shortcomings in its terms and conditions.

Gizmodo (13 October 2026) highlights the lifetime purchase, the speed and the absence of a file size limit, and criticises the paid encryption, the unresolved weaknesses from the ETH study and the short refund window.

Who pCloud suits – and who it does not

A good fit: you want to park a large archive (photos, videos, music, backups) for the long term without paying every year; you value a provider outside the USA; you need Linux support or a virtual drive.

Less of a fit: you work on documents with others every day (Google Drive), you need end-to-end encryption without a surcharge (Proton Drive), you want phone support – or you are not sure you will use the storage for more than three years. In that case the subscription is enough.

Buy during a promotion, not at list price, and check beforehand whether encryption is included in the bundle, which region is set, and that the 14-day refund window runs from the date of purchase.

FAQ

How much does pCloud cost in 2026?

2 TB cost $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year on subscription, or $499 as a lifetime purchase; 500 GB $4.99, $49.99 or $219; 10 TB $29.99, $299.99 or $1,499 (pcloud.com, 19 October 2026). In Europe pCloud bills in euros, and in promotions the lifetime plans are considerably cheaper.

Is a lifetime offer from a cloud provider trustworthy?

With pCloud, yes: the company has existed since 2013, is based in Baar (Zug, Switzerland) and funds its one-off buyers through new customers and business customers. According to the terms, the plan is valid for the lifetime of the account holder, up to a maximum of 99 years – in practice, for as long as pCloud exists.

Do I need pCloud Encryption on top?

Only for genuinely sensitive documents (contracts, ID documents, medical records). For photos and backups the standard encryption is enough. Encryption costs $150 one-off or $49.99 per year; bear in mind the weaknesses described by ETH Zurich in 2024.

Can I get a refund from pCloud?

Within 14 calendar days of purchase, requested in writing. After that, according to the terms, pCloud refunds nothing – not even on the lifetime plan. So test straight after buying whether everything works for you.

Where is my data stored with pCloud?

Depending on your choice at registration, in Luxembourg (EU) or in Dallas, Texas (USA). Switching later costs $19.99 and is possible at most every three months.

Has pCloud ever had a data breach?

No breach involving file contents is known. In February 2026, a bug in the desktop app made file and folder names from other users visible on some accounts – according to pCloud, without contents or login credentials. In 2024, ETH Zurich demonstrated weaknesses in the pCloud Encryption add-on.

pCloud or Google Drive – which is better?

Google Drive for document collaboration and 15 GB for free, pCloud for the one-off purchase, the EU server location and large media collections. The three-way comparison with Dropbox: (→ pCloud vs Google Drive vs Dropbox 2026: which cloud storage is worth it?).

Is there a pCloud discount code?

No, pCloud works with promotional prices rather than codes. The biggest discounts come around Black Friday: in 2025, 2 TB lifetime cost €279.

Our verdict
pCloud Lifetime

pCloud is the most honest option for anyone who wants to buy cloud storage rather than rent it: at a promotional price, 2 TB lifetime pays off after just under three years, the servers can be in the EU if you wish, and the contracting party is based in Switzerland. The trade-offs are support, document collaboration and the encryption, which costs extra. Buy during a promotion – and only if you really need the storage for more than three years.

2 TB lifetime as a one-off purchase instead of a subscription – in promotions from €279Prices according to pcloud.com on 19 October 2026 (US dollar view: 500 GB $219, 2 TB $499, 10 TB $1,499); in Europe billed in euros and considerably cheaper in promotions.
